A Look at a Book

It looks like nothing special, really. To some. Scribbles on a page, chicken marks, black scrawling lines that occasionally have a special pattern if you study them long enough (long enough to get a headache). A flurry of pages, fresh, white, and clean as an amateur cook’s apron. Or perhaps yellowed, full of crinkles—ugly and smelling of must and enclosure and stifling attics—and lovingly dog-eared. Great fuel for a fire.
Priceless, to others. A passport around the planet, a ticket through time and space and localities and cultures. A series of insights and information and knowledge that cannot be inherited, bought, or saved (once learnt) on a flashdrive that plugs into one’s ear to access one’s brain. A flurry of pages, fresh, white, and clean as an angel’s wing. Or perhaps yellowed, full of crinkles—a book’s face with wrinkles, if you fancy—and lovingly dog-eared. Great fuel for a mind.
