Love Heart2 (horizontal) by berndt2
I saw two heartthrob movies recently—two tales of love overcoming all obstacles (in an imperfect way, with pure feelings—imperfection for the tribulations, purity for the final triumph), of loss and human weakness and flaws and sacrifice. Two very different films and four very different characters with astonishing similarities (which were also astonishingly not cliché at all).
Chick flicks? Hardly. Romantic dramas, comedic and painful and hitting almost-too-close-to-home? Decidedly. “Dear John” and “Love and Other Drugs” shared very attractive (usually) and very troubled (again, usually) protagonists, all four of whom hide secrets and ordeals within them, all of whom eventually—and only eventually, only barely—attain their heart’s desire: pure love.
How? By finally projecting, is seems, the one thing they were looking for, the one more important thing of all. I laughed through the first half or both and wept through the second and smiled with a warmth in my heart at the very end. Isn’t that what the best movies do? Tickle your funny-bone (I don’t really mean elbow), lure out your tears, strum your heartstrings. They make you think—actively think… reconsider—and realize how lucky you are (if you are where you want to be) and how much courage you have capacity for as a human being (if you aren’t where you want to be). God willing, you become what you seek, if you practice what you believe, and you will attract what you yearn for most and project.
Need I say? Recommended.
