“THE UNBREAKABLE TIE” by Himitsuhana

“THE UNBREAKABLE TIE” by Himitsuhana

How ephemeral we are, and at once how temporary and howlegendary. It’s incredible to consider the big picture, the worldtapestry of both time and space, and to see how your own slenderthread is woven in, soft in texture and sharp in color, blending andlayering upon threads that crisscross beneath and around it.

On such a day when I was born, for instance, it’s amazing to think that Thomas Edison patented the first movie projector, Hurricane Carol unleashed nature’s fury, William Cobb demonstrated the world’s first solar-powered car, and Hollywood sweethearts Lawrence Oliver and Vivian Leigh got married—all on the same date. Thereare the great joys: Malaysia’s independence in 1957, Ireland’s IRAdeclared a ceasefire against Britain, and California caught its “NightStalker.” There are the great horrors: supposedly Jack the Ripper began his debut serial killing career in 1888; in 1997 the beloved Princess Diana was killed in a fatal car crash in Paris. There are the happy coincidences: the mutual birthdays of Tony DeFranco, Richard Gere, Edwin Moses, Eldridge Cleaver, James Coburn, Claudell Washington, myself!

Individually, we are so temporary, not at all timeless; together we are full of time, we make up time, for through our very existence we define what time means to us.When we’re here, we think we’ll live forever, we feel like life has embraced us, keeping us grounded as if with emotional manacles. Once we’re gone, it can seem as if wenever existed, as if all that’s left of us is a shadow in the sunlight, or a footprint on the moon.
