It’s a giant’s world. I do what I can to survive. I’m small, but I am mighty. My cousins are all bigger than me, and when humans see them they pretty much freak out. Sometimes they chase them. Usually they run away. I told you, they’re big. And this is a giant’s world.
Myself, I’m scrawny. But that’s turned out to be advantageous many a time. I can slink into a room unnoticed, can hide behind the curtains of a woman’s room and watch her undress, taking her time and thinking the curtains are drawn and the neighbors have slept. If I were the sort of creature to get goosebumps, I would in such circumstances, watching that cream-color skin and velvety curves of shoulder and throat, where I’ll later latch on to suck my dinner. I can wander through the hall, looking at the paintings pinned to the wall like dead flattened butterflies, and the treasure scattered on the floor of green wrappers and pink ribbons.
I can creep into a kitchen, memorizing where all the tasteless human foods are, seeing where the refrigerator is leaking and dripping so I can hatch my future babies in that puddle. I need to find a mate, first. But before that, I need to feast. And even before that, I need to find and stalk a victim. So much on my mind, and I’ve such a tiny speedily-whirring mind.
I do my best, but like I said, it’s a giant’s world. Not a mosquito’s.
