Pathos and Irony: Industrial Still-Life in Japan 12, Tokyo, Japan
After hours, the world is asleep and the machines, pale and grand, come to life in the stillness of the night. It is in these machines that the photographer Tetsugo Hyakutake finds the untouchable, almost ephemeral beauty, when the steel and copper almost glisten in the street lights. The steel beams and cranes are no longer cold, inanimate objects. Rather, their beauty is revealed to the night, but only selectively, only to that one late night passerby walking home from a night shift, tired gaze fixed to the unexpectedly bright, precise angles of the machines. “He settled in my chair, ever so carelessly. He looked like he belonged in my room more than me and I felt that I needed to get away from his persistent gaze.
Long ago, it was exactly what I wanted. To be with him in one room, under a spell of lust. But long ago I wanted much different things than I do today. At twenty two, perhaps, I would pull the chair with him in it closer to me. I would play a game that i knew I would eventually lose. I would succumb to hid words and his touch. (more…)

Is there anything that can invoke that inexplicable sense of danger in us? The kind of feeling that pierces through our skin, sending down a throng of chills down our spines and makes us tense up in the presence of an unseen threat. Is there anything left for us to fear any more, where we are too desensitized by watching the latest stories on the cholera epidemics and terrorist attacks on the ten o’clock news reports?

We have the responsibility to give our children only two things in our lifetime – the roots and the wings and, as some may now or some may eventually find out, the hardest part is never the wings. The roots are there to bring us back to where we came from, but the wings will take us places where we can become someone else. Someone our own parents might not even approve of, but someone that we feel the most comfortable being. (more…)
