Very infrequently, I feel a fury well up within me. It’s a rare emotion, but all the more terrifying for its infrequency. You say something, I snap back, you growl, I snarl, and before you know it we’re nearly jaw-to-jaw, roaring in a wrath that becomes neither of us.

The chipped gold of your fangs and the deep-set crinkles of your snout warn me that you’re good at this, you’ve done this before, you know how to fight. But you don’t frighten me. If you’re a seasoned warrior, I’m a desperate sniper, a mercenary to my emotions. They say a deep hate stems from your body and soul’s core, the place from which love springs as well. And that is why, I think, when the waves of rage subside and ebb away, I am left with a serenity of peace, as smooth and encompassing as a summer lake, and I am your guard and not your enemy, and I roar then only to protect you.
