For It is Only What You Make of It

You believe art is killing you,
You who are forced to commit such atrocities,
To paint such nightmares,
And bring them to life in the minds of others—
And all this, against your will—
Well it tell you it is not art that is killing you,
And I beg of you, never turn against your art,
Never for a moment,
For you will need it—
And you will need it badly—
Release, repent, release,
And without it you will find yourself flailing…
So cling to it, embrace it, and do not forsake it
As something evil,
For it is no more evil that your hand
Or your eye
Or the cells of your tongue.
It is we who wield something enough
To define it as good or evil,
And art can likewise be used as a weapon,
As can a voice, a pencil, and knife, a claw,
And yet these things can all provide good—
And not only goodness, but survival.
