For You I Would

Cry me a River by Donna Ingham
I could speak of eyes. I could write of mysteries. I could envision blinding tears of gold dripping from angelic demon eyes.
What this image inspires within me, instead, is a song I heard a long time ago by a famous Greek singer, Marinella, a song that I hold very dear to my heart. It’s a song of love… but not just any love; a love so raw, so powerful, so pure, so complete, that the one who loves becomes at once sinner and saint, murderer and savior, angel and demon.
And it goes something like this…
I’d become a beggar for you,
For you I’d suffer any degradation, I would for you,
For you I’d emerge naked in the streets,
Against all laws and against whatever’s holy…
I could rip out my veins for you,
Let my blood flow like water,
For you I could betray a nation—My God,
what shame—and yet, I would for you…
For you I’d worship a murderer,
Kiss a leper’s lips, I would for you,
For you I’d descend to the underworld,
And crawling I’d scale the highest mountain…
For you I’d step before the firing squad,
And smile and rejoice as if it were a celebration,
To let my blood flow free like water,
Without speaking a word, neither no nor why…
I could rip out my veins for you,
Let my blood flow like water,
For you I could betray a nation—My God,
what shame—and yet, I would for you…
