In Our Own Worlds

“SOMEWHERE SOMETIME” by Dorina Costras
Sometimes you hear someone say “Bah! Her! She’s in her own world!” or “I’m though with you! You’re so blind! You live in your own dimension!”
Often frustrated phrases, punctuated with exclamations and irritation. But really, the intrinsic element is that there is a vital truth in those words. We each are “in our own world,” and that is exactly where we are supposed to me. Constantly these worlds are overlapping—every single interaction with another person is an “overlapping of worlds.” But they remain separate nonetheless, like the fusion of colors in a Ven Diagram when two differently-hued bubbles meet and fuse.
I find it fascinating how our perceptions form our mentalities—and how our mentalities form our perceptions. It’s an indivisible emblem of our uniqueness, and it’s nothing less than beautiful, yet also frustratingly confusing in its difference. That beauty, that difference—as are many differences—is at once a blessing and a curse. Most often it’s a blessing, though, I think.
I’d go so far as to argue that our beliefs, thoughts, and emotions are the catalysts for our actions and reactions. But I’d go no further, for I am not a philosopher in name. But I feel that these differences lie within nature and nurture, and explain why each of us sees variety in the shapes of clouds, in dreams, in works of art.
If we had not the pre-aligned constellations, imagine what worlds we’d pattern in the sky!
