The girl thought she was cursed.
The ladles broke, the pots caught fire, the ovens were engulfed in flames. Often she made it out in the nick of time. Often, her cuisine never did.
She gave up one day, at last. She packed a knapsack and left her family. If she could not cook, she reckoned, she could at least walk.
She walked the nations of the world, and stayed where the doors opened for her and the light was warm and comforting. She saw strangers’ kitchen, smelt their smells, and read the plaques on their walls that were hung above the frying pans and dishtowels.
In America, it was Lots of love and lots of butter.
In Thailand, Lots of love and lots of paprika.
In India, Lots of love and lots of cumin.
In Italy, Lots of love and lots of oil.
When she’d seen enough she returned home, added the ingredients, cooked up a storm. She burnt half with an overflow of love, soften the rest with her tears, but the third time proved the charm. he added lots of everything—but with every single thing, she added an extra dose of love, a special spoonful of care, a cup of tenderness, a peppering of prayer.
And created a sensation.
