I look upon a simple soul, face grizzled and wrinkled with cares, or young and untouched by time, or any face in between—and it’s a joy to look, to share a look. Simplicity’s eyes flicker with a low but steady flame of kindness, the cheeks are chiseled in the smoothness that symbolizes honesty, innocence; someone who can sleep soundly embraced in the arms of their conscience.
It is the secret of lucky children, of sheltered or traumatized adults, of genuine monks, of dying men, of all babies. You can replicate, imitate, pretend, and play at anything—except that. You cannot mistake a good simple heart, no more than you can falsely imitate it, no less than you can easily fool it.
Humbleness.
Simplicity.
Straight-forward spartan honesty.
Man’s cleanest virtue.
