“LIFE ON THE BACK OF A SHELL” by Matteo Pontonutti
Sometimes there’s nothing left but to be turned inside-out, with your innardspainted a different color, so stark and vibrant that you don’t even recognizeyour own liver or your small intestine. Sometimes right-side-up isn’t right, and upside-down isn’t wrong. Sometimes walking on your head is useful, particularly if you live in a zone without gravity, and speaking with yourtoes is quite a memorable experience. Sometimes spelling backwards inFarsi is simply how it’s done, and other times you’ll have to sing a Chinesesong in Yiddish. The moon will wax and wane whether you’re in Norway orNigeria, but the man on the moon is only sometimes visible to the schemingnaked eye. Sometimes it’s never as it seems, and usually it’s never as it was.
