Dexter’s Choice, State #1 by Larry Zox

Dexter’s Choice, State #1 by Larry Zox

A unique example of a mixed media pochoir(French for stenciling), mastered by many artists because of the extraordinary lushness of colors arranged in geometrical shapes. Introduced in China many years ago, some says a thousand years became popular in France for commercial publishing circa 1800s.

This is an abstract figure that for some seems to depict a squatting woman with a very huge hat and embracing her son/daughter. Some could see only geometric shapes and lush colors.  While these same persons relate the combination of colors and shapes to an importance; for the artist and those who bought the pictures for display and admiration on their wall.

Abstract tell us more of the artist’s state of emotion and state of mind but it could take a few days and a few moments to finish, then we could say taking from this point of view a work of art tell us a part of the artist’s life story.

Untitled (Utopia Series) by Shi Lifeng

Depicted in this picture are the usual blossoms and buds complete with lush green leaves found in every well-cared for garden. What’s unusual with the scene presented by the artist in this work of art are the tiny red figures frolicking among the abundant and sumptuous flora.

Amidst the whites and greens the red figures seemingly that of fairies and fey that lived amongst the lush flowering wild gardens in remote forests as we are lead to believe according to critiques are conveying the belief of the artist in the growing prosperity of China. The frolicking figures are the Chinese people celebrating the new found peace that resulted to the current prosperity they are enjoying there and of the opportunities that such prosperity brings in bettering themselves.

What more could depict the love of a citizen of the place where he/she was born than depicting that place in very happy and prosperous paintings?

I am Not Pretty by Song Ling

I am Not Pretty by Song Ling

Here a woman with a very colorful and loud hairpiece is depicted. With the text “I am not pretty” written across her facial features dotted with orange dots formed like a mesh. Sseemingly negating the pretty picture she presented not diminished by her excessively decorated hair piece.

Beautiful green eyes peer at you under thick and curling lashes and from a slightly opened almond shaped eye. She has perfectly formed parted lips that conveys pouting innocence despite the lush pink lipstick on it.

Was the artist talking to the prospective audience that will be viewing this picture or was he talking to the girl’s mind to impose on her thoughts negative complex in nature and thus prevent her from false pride and saving her from the possible rot of self-involvement.

This should not be the case because however he may reign in a woman’s self-esteem it will always rear its head and dare to go despite possible recriminations.
