Peace, Tranquility, Apathy

Peace and tranquility elude most people today. They can’t sleep peacefully. They can’t relax. Calm is a word that has lately been lacking from their consciousness.  But how can they? What with the killings and shootings we hear of, child prostitution, floods and tsunamis which affect thousands, starving nations, mass layoffs, huge corporations closing down, wars spurred by religions, wildfires dislocating hundreds…
I can go on and on but then I’d fill up pages instead of lines. I am trying to show you that there is so much bad news going on in this blue planet that peace and tranquility are words seldom used, much less felt. How long will those two remain, like a slick fish slipping away from a child’s hands? Millions remain indifferent to the plight of this world. They can go on with their lives concerned only about personal matters and are emotionally blind about the news they see on TV.  Perhaps, yes, they can react; they might even cry when they see sad stories or shocking video clips of dying children—but the emotions linger only for a few minutes more. After a while the people go inside their bedrooms and sleep soundly. How? What has happened to the human soul? Is apathy finally taking its toll?
