“And Yet I Stay….” by Helena Babic
Once upon a time I told you
I’d like to see the world–the whole wide entire world
I’d like to fly higher than the spires of palaces, the chimneys of homes, the wingbeats of the birds,
And you clung close to me and replied that my kiss smelt of jasmine and mint
Once upon a time I told you
I want to soar further than the edge of the world, the edge of the mind,
that I want wings to conquer the skies,
You drew wings for me on an empty sheet of paper,
And begged me, your life, your soul, your better half, not to go…
So I stayed, so you wouldn’t be alarmed.
So I stayed, so you wouldn’t be afraid.
So I stayed, so you wouldn’t be alone.
