I’ll share with you something that you may have not actually heard before.
You know what’s actually quite admirable?
Ok, perhaps not something to actually admire. But I don’t mind it… let’s put it that way.
Wrinkles.
(At the right place, primarily, and secondly at the right time.)
There’s an obsession in our culture—and you let me know if I’m wrong—and in many other cultures, although perhaps not all, in fighting the signs of aging. Of course, who wouldn’t prefer supple over sagging skin, or boundless youthful energy over arthritis and an increased tendency of hip fractures? And who ever wants to give up that feeling of hell yes I’m king of the world… and as such, oh yes, I am tough and feel no pain and sure I plan to live forever.
Yet the wrinkles, those very fine or very pronounced lines, that life gradually tattoos around our eyes and mouths, are not necessarily something to tear out your hair about, especially if you’re at an age prone to wrinkles.
Not only are they a symbolic emblem of the wisdom you’ve—hopefully—amassed throughout your years on earth, but they are a very clear indication of where happiness can be found: right upon your face. Smile for me—and when you smile, let your eyes crinkle. It’s the human equivalent to the friendly crackling of a fire, the cheery notes of the songbird, the warm rays of sunshine.
That’s why I said, the right sort of wrinkles…
More than one author has said this before, and it’s worthwhile to mention it again. Wrinkles should only show where the laughter has been…
So go ahead, smile. I’ll love you for it all the more.
