“SUNSET PRAYER” by Carolyn Staut

Free your mind. Stand at the edge of the surf, just so the water sips your toes. Inhale and you’ll breathe in the exhaling of the sea, the perfume of the brine, the scent of fish who are in heat, or hunger, or anger. Close your eyes. Listen to it calling for you. A plainitive cry of a gull, the heartening squeak of a dolphin, the near-soundless clackety-clack of a crab scuttling sideways above the stones. If you dare to outstretch your arms, you’ll almost embrace the world. You will feel it embracing you back—when it fits its fancy—when the wind buffets at your body, encircling your wrists and your waste with a damp air that tastes of summer, seaweed, and sunlight. It’s easiest at times like these to realize you really are a part of all this—a part of air, and water, and earth, and wind, and embraces, and all the world’s yesterdays, todays, and tomorrows.
