The Olympics of Your Words

The ideal is that I hear you when you speak, and that this is mutual. The ideal is that there is no static—confusion, chaos, cigarette swirls of smoke. No erratic noises and nuisance—nothing that can’t be overcome, at least. Earmuffs, hats, and headphones don’t frighten me much—only as symbols of withdrawal, of communicative hermitage. The words I speak have got to perform a marathon to reach you. Hurdle over a void of ignorance. Stumble through a fog of bias. Stagger over mountains of mounting fury. Claw through the bindings of a maddening confusion and survive under a drought brought on by the dazzling blinding heat of pride and self-righteousness. The goal is the inner ear, the mind. The golden medal is your smile.
