“WHAT IF THERE WAS NOTHING LEFT?” by Plunder
If everything were to end the next day, the next hour—the next
moment, even… it wouldn’t matter, as long as I could set the terms
for one thing. If the tempest were to blow away my country and my
brain, if the fires were to boil my home and my dreams, if the
earthquakes were to jolt my house and my heart out of place, that
would be fine… I’d accept it, yes.
As long as the last thing on earth is you, as long as I breathe in
your scent before the flames engulf my eyeballs, it would barely
matter. As long as I hear your heartbeat struggling against the smoke
alongside mine, I’d feel no fear, I’d taste no regret, my faltering heart
would be bursting with such love for you that it’d probably beat
double-time enough for the both of us.
If we were the last creatures on earth, we’d finally have some
peace and quiet and I’d be able to ask you out to the prom like a
normal human being instead of shouting it out to you as I am now,
above the racket of this pigsty of a high school hall.
Quick, pretend it’s the end of the world.
Is that a yes?
